AFRICOM acknowledges civilian casualties in Somalia

Mogadishu(HNN)-The US African command has acknowledged unintended civilian casualties by its strike in Somalia.

The recognition came after it received allegations of innocent civilian casualties during its drone strikes in Somalia Lower Shabelle region which is an active al Shabaab area.

“Regrettably two civilians were killed and three others injured in a February 2019 airstrike. We have the highest respect for our Somali friends and we are deeply sorry this occurred.” Said U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend.

The command said it notified the Federal Government of Somalia and appropriate U.S. authorities verifying the credibility of the allegations and the fact that two civilians were unintentionally killed and three were injured as a result of an airstrike.

In its quarterly report, the command said it conducted 91 airstrikes against Violent Extremist Organizations in Somalia and Libya in which it received 70 allegations about 27 separate possible civilian casualty incidents with approximately 90 alleged civilian casualties.

“We assess that it is likely that two civilians were regrettably and unintentionally killed and three were injured as a result of the airstrike that also killed two al-Shabaab terrorists who were the intended targets.”

Africom further said together with their partners they are working to reduce threats to the United States and our partners by conducting operations to counter violent extremist organizations (VEOs) in order to enhance regional security in Somalia, Libya, and other nations.
